'Homecoming' Season 2 Review: Déjà Vu All Over Again ...

Here she was, late to the party, making her television debut half a decade after every other big-name star in Hollywood. In that sense this momentum, this sense of “what the hell just happened?”, reminds you of another Amazon show, The Sinner. It was, in the end, a somewhat briefly told tale about two people working together to overcome the tragic fact that they were stuck in a system they couldn’t overcome.

Returning characters include human guinea pig Walter (played by James) and Geist receptionist-turned-leader Audrey Temple (Hong Chau).[Full Review in Spanish].Things feel mechanical rather than risky and clandestine, serviceable rather than seductive.

the mind. Not so with Amazon’s “Homecoming,” whose superlative first season was fueled both by the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Stephan James and by Sam Esmail’s direction, with its self-conscious debts to Hitchcock.

The problem is that her journey, and the show’s other “new” riddles and subplots, seem designed to drive viewers back to the central story of last season. It’s a solid but ultimately wasted opportunity not only to use that rowboat image, but also to revisit the world of Homecoming, and to give Janelle Monáe her first significant TV role.Returning characters include human guinea pig Walter (played by James) and Geist receptionist-turned-leader Audrey Temple (Hong Chau).

This is not the fault of Janelle Monáe, who plays lead this time; following Roberts at the peak of her powers is a hard ask, made more complicated by the fact that the scenario is so similar. There are complicated long shots and the orchestral score is distractingly archaic.By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policyand the Terms and Policies, and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango.

There are indications she may be a drug user.Cast: Janelle Monáe, Hong Chau, Stephan James, Chris Cooper, Joan CusackCreators: Eli Horowitz and Micah BloombergDirector: Kyle Patrick AlvarezPremieres: Friday (Amazon). It’s mature.

It’s been a particular frustration of this era of TV to watch shows that demanded no amplification — self-contained limited series that ended elegantly — contort themselves into new and unnatural shapes to keep the applause going.Everything about this series is first rate. Here she was, late to the party, making her television debut half a decade after every other big-name star in Hollywood.

t was hard to hear about Homecoming (Amazon Prime) without feeling slightly sorry for Julia Roberts. And Julia Roberts is excellent.Robot’s” Sam Esmail made the complex and paranoid narrative pop — at least in dramatic terms.

In her expanded role, Chau continues a tremendous recent TV run that has included HBO's Watchmen and a standout episode of Forever on Amazon.Somebody standing back on shore flees when she calls for help. But that could be said about most of Season Two.

In the future, she’s a waitress in a diner. The season has a good amount of fun exploring how the seeming doormat of Season One could now be a stone-cold corporate killer, and in letting Chau shift between the two as the story moves around in time.Even if you remember the broad strokes of Season One — the two timelines, the fact that the amnesia timeline largely looked like it was shot as a vertical iPhone video, the crackling energy between Roberts and James, maybe even the collapsible reading glasses worn by Shea Whigham’s Columbo-esque DOD sleuth — you probably have long since forgotten that it ended with a scene involving a minor character, Audrey.

The writing is spare, the directing bland, but at least there's pleasure in watching the actors.Cooper makes Geist interesting with almost no supporting dialogue and when he gets to play opposite Joan Cusack as a similarly underwritten military figure, it's like watching Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer pantomiming tennis without a ball.Homecoming moves along reasonably fast and the last couple episodes, especially the finale, find some momentum that the start of the season lacks — especially if you're trying to remember where the first season ended and what the creators expect you to still care about.

Welcome to the party, Julia. She’s undimmed from her glory days. There's some minor elegance to how small creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg keep this chapter, which can be viewed as a curious checklist decently executed and finally nothing more.

Stephan James played a former soldier in treatment at the facility, which was owned by a shady “wellness” company and military contractor, the Geist corporation.Amazon’s big hope for autumn sees Roberts play a psychologist caught up in a complicated government programme.(The story certainly doesn’t need more episodes, but some of the characters could have used them.).

There are complicated long shots and the orchestral score is distractingly archaic. This is as enthralling a mystery series as any of the more high-profile efforts that have been buzzed about over the last few years. It resembles, perhaps, one of its own characters after undergoing the amnesia-inducing treatment at the show’s center — certain of where it is but unclear on why, familiar in appearance but emptied out of spark.'Homecoming' Review Hollywood Reporter.
